About us
Welcome
LOKO Integrated Urban Farming is pioneering sustainable food production in the heart of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. We believe in the power of small-scale urban agriculture to provide fresh, local produce and protein while nurturing healthier communities.
Founded in 2020 by husband-wife duo Mekonnen and Tsega, LOKO operates a diverse urban farm utilizing aquaponic systems, vegetable gardens, and animal husbandry. Our integrated model aims to maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
At the core of our operations is a state-of-the-art aquaponics greenhouse where we raise tilapia fish and grow a variety of fruits, herbs, and vegetables without soil. The nutrient-rich water from the recirculating aquaponic system fertilizes our plants while the plants filter the water for the fish - creating a sustainable ecosystem.
Beyond aquaponics, LOKO's urban farm houses chickens, quails, rabbits, and black soldier fly larvae. Their manure provides vital nutrients for composting to nourish our vegetable gardens. We also use black soldier fly larvae for sustainable animal feed and nutrient-dense fertilizer production.
Our multi-faceted urban farm enables us to provide the community with truly farm-fresh eggs, organic chicken and quail meat, fertilizer, and produce grown just around the corner. We sell our humanely raised protein and chemical-free vegetables at local farmer's markets and to restaurants committed to serving local, sustainable fare.
As part of our commitment to education and community, we offer hands-on workshops for school children and aspiring urban farming entrepreneurs seeking to replicate our model. We take pride in cultivating the next generation of urban agriculture leaders.
Our dream is a future where cities feed themselves through networks of small, thriving urban farms. We know this is possible through the power of integrated regenerative agriculture practices. Join us!
